Walking in William Land Park

If you’re planning on going to William Land Park today, be prepared: it’s the 25th annual SPCA Doggy Dash and Bark in the Park festival!

(Actually, since I’m posting this a bit after 2 PM, the festivities should just be wrapping up, but if you’re seeing an unusual number of dogs, that would be why.)

William Land Regional Park, also known to locals simply as Land Park, is one of the city’s biggest and best known parks. Aside from being a large (166.5 acres!) and luxurious park where you can hang out, enjoy a picnic, cool off in the wading pool, jog or stroll around, play basketball, softball or soccer, you’ll also find these attractions within the park:

And if those still weren’t enough reasons to visit, well, you might just be juvenile enough to be reeled in by this very unfortunately named softball field:

Quirky on Q Street

Sacramento has the entire alphabet in its downtown grid, so you’ll be able to orient yourself by figuring out where you are from A to Z. But once you leave the grid, things can get messy.

Q Street, in particular, has a number of stops and starts, dead ends, disconnected pieces, and other quirks.

But if you’re on the long, unbroken stretch of Q, here’s a list of all the things you’ll find there:

Journey to the Jensen Botanical Garden

Though the Jensen Botanical Garden may be small (at only 3.5 acres), in comparison with other cities’ botanical gardens, visitors find that the price is right: admission is free!

Located in Carmichael, the garden is open to the public from 8 AM to dusk, daily, and includes a Nature Path for the Blind with Braille placards indicating the names of plants throughout.

Spring is the best time of year to visit, since this is when most of the flowers will be in full bloom. April is a great month to get out and enjoy nature, in any of Sacramento’s parks.
