Digging the Dragon House

One of Sacramento’s “secret” sights (but not too secret, since it’s been featured on the Atlas Obscura website) is the Dragon House.

Located in the Curtis Park neighborhood, this private home is decorated with a sweeping dragon mosaic (hence the name) along one side, and was originally created by local artist Raymond Gage and homeowner Carolyn Belmore.

According to a 2016 story from ABC 10, Carolyn and Raymond collaborated on the mosaic project after a failed attempt to stucco the side of the house back in the 1970s (the stucco painters refused to redo the side after the paint began flaking off), working with handmade clay tiles to create both the dragon and a white tiger mosaic.

In addition to the dramatic mosaics, the house also features stained glass windows (also created by Gage and the Belmores) and an artistically landscaped front yard complete with topiaries.

Harry Potter fans may also be interested to learn that the Dragon House is located on Diagon Alley (in between 3rd and 4th Avenues) off of 21st Street.
